It has been revealed that a legendary Irish sports star stole donations from fans by disguising himself as if he was undergoing hospital treatment.

Dennis Joseph Kerry (54), a former member of the Republic of Ireland national hurling team, recently admitted 10 of the 21 fraud charges in a local court, according to foreign media outlets such as Britain 'The ' and 'Irish Times' on the 4th (local time).

Hurling is a traditional Irish sport that uses sticks and balls to score at the opponent's goal, and is popular enough to be called a national sport in Ireland. Dennis Joseph Kerry played for Kilkenny from the 1990 s to the early 2000 s and was called the "Maradona of hurling", won nine All-Star awards, and was named the 2000 "Player of the Year".

However, after retirement, he suffered about 7.3 million pounds (about 13.6 billion won) in debt due to a series of failures in hygiene products and hotel-related businesses, and later committed fraud by collecting donations from fans and acquaintances under the false pretext of fighting cancer.

From 2014 to 2022, he asked for money, saying, `I need cancer treatment costs.' In the process, he sent photos to acquaintances that seemed to be hospitalized. In particular, it has been confirmed that a photo of an iPhone charger cable inserted into the nostril was used to make it look like you are wearing an oxygen respirator on your nose.

The photo later spread as a meme through social media, drawing both ridicule and anger from the public.

Prosecutors said Dennis Joseph Kerry asked billionaire businessman Dennis O'Brien and a number of other victims to donate and induced people's sympathy by presenting false medical certificates.

However, Dennis Joseph Kerry appealed for some sympathy in court, saying, `Although he has not been diagnosed with cancer, he underwent heart surgery last year, and has mental health problems.'

Dennis Joseph Kerry was set to go on trial in October but is expected to be sentenced without a formal trial after pleading guilty to the charges. Currently, he has been released on bail.
