American actor Sidney Sweeney (27) has recently been embroiled in a controversy over a jeans advertisement 'white supremacy', sparking a heated debate there.

On the 1st (local time), foreign media such as the U.S. media 'AP Communications', 'New York Post' and 'Deadline' reported that a new jeans advertisement by clothing brand American Eagle modeled by Sydney Sweeney is causing controversy among some consumers.

The ad in question is "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans." It consists of language play that takes advantage of the same pronunciation of the English words 'jeans' and 'genes'.

In the actual video, Sidney Sweeney appeared and passed the phrase 'Great Genes' on the wall, with a line drawn above 'genes' and a direction changing to 'jeans' was inserted.

In the ad, Sidney Sweeney wears jeans and "genes are passed down from parents to children. It determines the color of your hair, the color of your eyes, and your personality."

It then closes Sydney Sweeney's blue eyes with the line "My jeans are blue".

With this production, consumers criticized that advertisements featuring white women with blond hair and blue eyes ideally describe certain genetic traits and remind them of 'eugenics'.

In particular, it was pointed out that the method of promoting products by emphasizing genetic traits reminds us of the logic of genetic selection in Nazi Germany.

In fact, on social media, it's like "Hitler-style propaganda.", "Subtle but unpleasant" and "old-fashioned marketing that sets white people as ideal types" poured in. Some users interpreted the advertisement as 'intended provocation'.

Marcus Collins, a professor at the University of Michigan's Los Business School, pointed out that the controversy could have been avoided if models of different races appeared together and played the same language.

On the other hand, there was also a response that it was an excessive interpretation. Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly said on social media that `more attention is being paid to white women with blonde hair and blue eyes because of the over-reaction.'

As the controversy grew, American Eagle issued an official statement saying, `The message of this campaign was to express confidence in each person's own way, just jeans", he explained. However, there was no explanation for the phrase 'great genes' in the advertisement.

Sydney Sweeney has not made an official statement on the ad controversy so far.
