Hwang Jung-eum, accused of embezzlement of 4.2 billion won, sentenced to two years in prison and four years of probation in the first trial

Actor Hwang Jung-eum was sentenced to probation in the first trial, where he was charged with embezzlement of large amounts.

On the 25th, the Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 2 (Judge Lim Jae-nam) sentenced Hwang Jeong-eum, who was indicted on charges of violating the law on aggravated punishment for specific economic crimes, to two years in prison and four years of probation.

Hwang Jung-eum was accused of embezzling 4.2 billion won in funds for the family corporation 'Hunminjeongeum Entertainment', which he owns 100% of the stake in in 2022. Hwang Jung-eum was the only entertainer belonging to the corporation and was found to have used most of the embezzled funds to invest in virtual currency. Some were found to have been used to pay property taxes and local taxes and to pay for credit cards.

During the trial, Hwang Jung-eum acknowledged all the charges but said that the amount was fully repaid on May 30 and June 5.

The court considered the fact that the company's damage was attributed to the defendant himself, that the amount spent on speculative investment and the purchase of expensive personal goods was considerable, and that the crime was not light enough", he explained the reason for the sentencing.

Immediately after the sentence, Hwang Jung-eum said in front of the reporters, `I'm sorry for causing concern. I've never been near the police station before, so I cried when I heard the result." The defense also expressed its position that it respects the court's decision.
