Ahead of the first anniversary of the late MBC weatherman Oyoanna, who died in September last year, her mother, Jang Yeon-mi, went on a fast, urging the government to resolve the issue of freelance employment for non-regular workers.

Jang held a press conference in front of MBC's headquarters in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 8th and said, `Please solve the problem before the first cycle and prevent such a tragedy from occurring.'

Then "OhI thought Anna was the only one who was struggling, but many young people in the broadcast media industry were suffering. I want to relieve Yoanna's unfairness and become a proud mother."

The press conference was co-hosted by 42 civic groups, including 'Workplace Gapjil 119' and 'Ending Credits' for the names of the people making the broadcast. Groups set up a memorial altar in front of MBC for the portrait of the deceased, and Jang plans to continue his hunger strike here.

It also plans to hold a memorial cultural festival at the same place on the 15th to mark the first anniversary of the deceased. They are demanding an official apology from the president of MBC and the conversion of weather forecasters to full-time positions.

Oyoanna joined the MBC open recruitment weatherman in 2021 and died in September last year at the age of 28. Two months after his death, the suicide note found on the deceased's mobile phone contained an indication of workplace harassment, raising suspicions of workplace harassment.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor acknowledged that the deceased was bullied as a result of special labor supervision in May, but said that the Labor Standards Act does not apply to the rule of 'workplace harassment' given that his legal status is freelance.

The bereaved family has filed a lawsuit for damages against the deceased's fellow weatherman A, but A denies the allegations altogether. MBC renewed its contract with A according to the results of the Ministry of Employment and Labor's investigation, and signed contracts with other weather forecasters.
