According to Yonhap News and other reports on the 24th, the bereaved family reported that former lawmaker Byun died the night before at Hyemin Hospital in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul.
He is survived by his wife Choi Myung-sook and two sons (Byeon Myeong-ji and Byun Ji-seok). The mortuary will be set up in Room 35 of the funeral hall of Asan Medical Center in Seoul, and condolences will be available from 12 p.m. on the 25th. The cause of death is 8 a.m. on the 27th, and the burial site is Pangyo Jahayeon.
Former lawmaker Byun, who is from Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, joined the Central Broadcasting Station (KBS) in 1963 when he graduated from Seosan Agricultural High School and was studying psychology at Chung-Ang University. After moving to MBC (MBC) in 1969, he was selected by the late Kim Kyung-tae (1935-1995), the best entertainment producer at the time, and gained huge popularity with his beautiful hosting and unique generous laughter through his works.
He started his career in politics in 1995 when he served as a spokesman for the preparatory committee for the establishment of the Liberal Democratic Union. Starting with the 15th general election in 1996, he became a three-term lawmaker in the 16th and 18th Seosan and Taean districts, and served as the chairman of the Health, Welfare and Family Committee in the 18th National Assembly. In 2011, he finished his official political activities as the leader of the Liberty Forward Party.
