(Seoul = Yonhap News) Former lawmaker Byun Woong-jeon, a popular announcer in the 1970s and 1980s and served as a three-term lawmaker and party leader, passed away at Hyemin Hospital in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul on the night of the 23rd, the bereaved family said on the 24th. He was 85.

Byun Woong-jeon, who gained popularity by hosting MBC's signature entertainment shows in the 1970s and 1980s, and later served as a three-term lawmaker and political party leader, passed away.

The deceased died at Hyemin Hospital in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 23rd. He was 85.

Former lawmaker Byun, who is from Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, joined the company as an announcer for the Central Broadcasting Station (KBS) in 1963 when he was studying psychology at Chung-Ang University. Since then, he has gained experience by conducting public broadcasting and discussion programs during the provincial government's announcement, and moved to MBC in 1969.




Afterwards, he became very popular as an entertainment MC at the time, taking over 'Enjoyable Cheongbaekjeon', 'Acting Agent', and 'Myeongrang Sports Festival', and even served as president of MBC Productions (currently MBC C&I).

In 1995, he entered politics as a spokesman for the preparatory committee for the establishment of the Liberal Democratic Union, and served as a three-term lawmaker in Seosan and Taean districts in the 16th and 18th general elections in 1996. In the 18th National Assembly, he served as the chairman of the Health, Welfare and Family Committee and as the leader of the Liberty Forward Party in 2011.

In 2008, broadcaster Yoo Jae-seok and former MBC announcer Na-kyung drew attention by officiating at the couple's wedding.




He is survived by his wife Choi Myung-sook, his two sons Byun Ji-myung and Byun Ji-seok. The mortuary was set up in Room 35 of the funeral hall of Asan Medical Center in Seoul, and the coffin was placed at 8 a.m. on the 27th, and the burial site was Pangyo Zaha-yeon.
