Hyundai Engineering & Construction has successfully completed a Korean CO2 capture and liquefaction integration process demonstration facility, and is converting eco-friendly energy and spreading the hydrogen economy in earnest.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction held a ceremony to complete the CO2 capture and liquefaction demonstration facility at the hydrogen specialization complex in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do on the 14th (Tue). Key officials, including Kim Tae-young, head of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Kim Jae-young, head of Hyundai Engineering and Construction Technology Research Institute, attended the event to share the empirical results of the Korean CO2 collection and liquefaction integration process.

The demonstration facility completed this time was the result of the Ministry of Science and ICT's national project of 「Development of hybrid CO2 capture, liquefaction, and utilization technology for blue hydrogen production」 in 2022, proving the possibility of commercialization through R&D and field verification.

As a general organizer, Hyundai E&C led the overall process design, construction, and operation. For the first time in Korea, it has completed a hybrid integrated process that combines wet and separator collection methods, and through this, it has established a facility that can stably collect and liquefy 30,000 tons of CO2 per year from exhaust gas generated at hydrogen production facilities.

Through this project, Hyundai Engineering & Construction proved that it secured high purity CO2 with more than 90% collection efficiency and 95% purity, and the collected CO2 can be used as liquid carbonic acid and dry ice through the liquefaction process, sold as special gas, and converted into synthetic fuel and chemical raw materials.

In particular, major companies such as Hyundai Motor, Lotte Chemical, Korea Institute of Energy Technology, Clear Environmental Industry, Ennis, and Korea Special Gas, and universities and research institutes participated in this project jointly. Hyundai Engineering & Construction has significant significance in that it has increased domestic technology independence through industry-academic cooperation and expanded the industrial ecosystem in the field of CO2 collection and utilization.

Meanwhile, based on the empirical results, Hyundai Engineering & Construction plans to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality by expanding CO2 capture and liquefaction technology to various industrial sites such as large hydrogen plants, incinerators, and LNG boilers at home and abroad. In addition, it is focusing on securing core capabilities for expanding the hydrogen value chain, such as completing the green hydrogen production infrastructure based on water electrolysis technology in Buan, Jeollabuk-do last month.
