Writer Kang Pul met with Sports Chosun at somewhere in Samcheong-dong, Seoul on the afternoon of the 24th and responded to an interview to commemorate the opening of 'Light Shop'.
Disney+'s original series 'Light Shop' tells the story of customers with suspicious secrets coming to the only place that lights up the end of a dark alley'Light Shop'. For 12 days after its release on the 4th, it achieved the highest viewing record among Korean original contents released in 2024 based on global viewing and the second highest viewing among Korean original contents released after the launch of Disney+.
Regarding the success of 'Light Shop', Kang Pul said "It was developed in an unfamiliar way, but thank you for following the viewers well" and "Episode 1 through 4 could have felt unfriendly because it was a process of unraveling each character's narrative, but I really wanted to try a structure in which the story begins in earnest from episode 5." He confessed that he felt a lot of pressure as the work was planned in a different direction from the traditional box office formula.
In particular, regarding the difficulties of the horror genre, "If the identity of the ghost is revealed, the tension may decrease, so we focused on people's stories to overcome it." In addition, he was able to make these experimental attempts thanks to platforms like "Disney+."," he said, expressing his appreciation.
Regarding the collaboration with director Kim Hee-won, Kang said, "I suggested directing first. Director Kim has a great sense not only as a director but also as an actor, so I received a lot of help from this work."." He was so passionate that the director came to the studio even at dawn"He recalled "I finished the work by talking a lot to each other."
Regarding director Kim Hee-won, he said, `I gained great trust after seeing him convincingly play an ordinary person without superpowers in moving.' "If I have a chance, I would like to work with you in the next work."He showed high confidence in Kim Hee-won as a director and actor.
On the other hand, Kang said of his return as a webtoon artist that `webtoons are like hometowns,' adding that `sometimes I want to go back when I have a hard time.' But now he's concentrating on his playwriting. `Although the grammar of dramas and cartoons are different, I want to do my best in what I'm doing" he said.
Kang Pul also mentioned 'Moving2' and plans for later works. He said, `We're preparing for Moving 2, but I want to make it impossible to predict what kind of work will come out later." In addition, "We focus on dealing with people's stories and hope that the work will be a long-lasting classic."
Finally, he said "It is my philosophy to capture the struggles of ordinary people. I hope that people will be explored rather than events, and that people's stories will be memorable through their works."
