Everyone will die…The movie was disastrous in February, with sales X audience numbers halving year-on-year

In February, sales and the number of audiences in theaters fell sharply, and the Borit Pass in theaters is unusual.

According to the Korean Film Industry Settlement Report of February 2025 released by the Film Promotion Committee on the 19th, theater sales in February this year were 53.1 billion won, down 52.0% (57.5 billion won) from the same month last year, and the total number of audiences was 5.47 million, down 52.2% (5.98 million) from the same month last year.

Other than 'Captain America: Brave New World' (directed by Julius Ona), which recorded sales of 14.6 billion won (14.6 million viewers) in February, there were no films with sales of more than 10 billion won. The total cumulative sales from January to February were 138.4 billion won, down 25.3% (46.8 billion won) from the same period last year, and the cumulative number of audiences was 14.38 million, down 25.1% (4.83 million).

'Captain America: Brave New World' topped the box office in February with sales of 14.6 billion won (1.46 million viewers), but its performance was lower than that of 'Wonka' (director Paul King), which had sales of 28.6 billion won (2.94 million viewers) in February of the previous year, resulting in a decrease of more than 39% year-on-year in foreign currency sales of 26.8 billion won (2.78 million viewers).

Korean movies in February are even more disturbing. Sales of Korean movies fell more than 60% year-on-year to 26.3 billion won (2.7 million viewers). Released during the Lunar New Year holiday in January, 'Hitman 2' (directed by Choi Won-seop) 'Black Nuns' (directed by Kwon Hyuk-jae) 'Untold Secrets' (directed by Seo Yoo-min) continued to be shown and ranked at the top of the box office in February, but sales and audience numbers dropped significantly compared to February 2024, when mega-hit films 'Parmyo' (directed by Jang Jae-hyun) and 'Citizen Deok-hee' (directed by Park Young-joo) were popular.

There was also a twist. "Occult" Korean animation 'Excuse Rock' (directed by Kim Dong-chul), which was released on the 19th of last month, became the main character of the reversal. 'Excuse Rock' is well-received for embodying the best-selling novel of the same name with a high degree of completion, and it ranked sixth in the overall box office and first in independent and artistic films with sales of 1.9 billion won in February (the audience of 200,000). In the domestic market, where animations for children (family) with a total audience rating are dominated, 'Excuseum Rock', which is not a total audience rating, continues to be a box office hit, breaking the record of 4.2 billion won in cumulative sales as of the 16th of this month (440,000 cumulative audiences).
