MBC's liberal arts program 'The Reasoned Architecture-Space Traveler' (hereinafter 'The Reasoned Architecture') first aired on the 22nd opened its first architectural trip under the theme of 'The Two Men Who Designed Korea, Kim Joong-up and Kim Soo-geun'.
Kim Joong-up and Kim Soo-geun are first-generation architects who have greatly influenced the history of Korean urban development by building large buildings in Korea, which was devastated by the Korean War.
In the first episode, MC Hong Jin-kyung and musical actor Kim Ho-young traveled around Seoul and performed the "Kim Joong-up Architecture Tour". The first masterpiece of Kim Joong-up was the French Embassy in Korea, which is evaluated as the starting point of modern Korean architecture. The French Embassy in Korea was restored in 2023 after renovation to save the original design of Kim Joong-up when it was completed in 1962. The third work was 'House of the Sun', which was completed in 1982, one of the later works of Kim Joong-up. During Park Chung-hee's military dictatorship, Kim Joong-up, who criticized the government for the "Wow Apartment Incident" and the "August 10 Seongnam (Gwangju Grand Complex) Uprising", was expelled from Korea, and the modern and contemporary explanation that "House of the Sun" is a work he designed after returning home enriched his background knowledge.
The building was originally built as Yeongdeungpo's first department store, but it is now used as a mart. Hong Jin-kyung and Kim Ho-young found the characteristics of Kim Joong-up architecture, such as curves, ramps, and stairs, and were proud, saying, `I can see as much as I know.'
The intention of Kim Joong-up, who prioritized the enjoyment of citizens using space, was contained in 'House of the Sun'. Hong Jin-kyung guessed the meaning of the rooftop glass dome, which used to be the space for the sun's light, and Yoo Hyun-jun "Wow! He's an architect," he said, giving a special compliment. Yoo Hyun-jun recently said that it is a trend to create a rest area using nature on the roof of a department store, and that "House of the Sun" is better than a large department store, and that's why even people who haven't paid can come and enjoy the space.
