SBS Invests 20 Million in Indonesia's Largest Content Agency

SBS has begun to target the Southeast Asian content market. It strategically invested about 20 million dollars (about 27 billion won) in MD Entertainment, Indonesia's largest content producer, speeding up its global growth strategy.

SBS recently participated in the paid-in capital increase by acquiring some of the preferred rights of MD Corp Enterprises, MD Entertainment's largest shareholder, at a discounted price. On June 25, it received final approval from the Indonesian Financial Supervisory Service (OJK), and when the final payment is completed, SBS will secure a 3.8% stake in MD Entertainment.

The investment has been discussed since the end of last year and has been decided after on-site inspection this year, SBS stressed that it has preempted the strategic base of the Southeast Asian content market.

`This investment is part of strengthening overseas partnerships in line with the new growth strategy,' SBS President Moon Jae-in said."SBS is promoting as a key pillar of its global strategy of `Let's cross the terrestrial, let's cross the Republic of Korea.' "We will continue to expand our overseas partnerships in various forms that are profitable."

In response, MD Entertainment Chairman Punjabi expressed his expectation, saying, `SBS' strategic investment participation will be a great boost to our global expansion' and `It will serve as an opportunity to confirm the potential of cross-border content collaboration.'

Founded in 2002, MD Entertainment is Indonesia's first publicly traded content producer, producing the most successful movie of all time in Indonesia, the KKN di Desa Penari (2022, audience of 1.06 million), as well as the 'Danur' series. Recently, it has expanded its broadcasting business by acquiring terrestrial channels 'NET TV' and rebranding them as 'MDTV'.

Indonesia is attracting attention from global media companies due to its huge market size of 280 million people, increased demand for local content, and rapid growth of the OTT market. Through this investment, SBS expects to strengthen its position in the Southeast Asian market and make a new leap forward in both content production and distribution.
