On the 31st, a production presentation for MBC's Friday-Saturday drama `Merry Kills People" was held at the MBC headquarters in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Director Park Joon-woo, actors Lee Bo-young, Lee Min-ki, Kang Ki-young, Kwon Hae-hyo and Yoon Ga-yi attended the site.
'Mary Kills People" is a suspense drama about a doctor who helps untreatable patients die of assisted death and a detective who tracks them down. It will provide viewers with deep empathy and something to think about by reflecting social discourse in a timely manner with a drama about assisted death that is becoming an issue around the world.
Director Park Joon-woo, who was spotlighted for his original directing sense that harmonized action and emotion in 'Model Taxi' and 'Crash', and writer Lee Soo-ah, who was recognized for her chewy character play and three-dimensional narrative skills in the films 'The Law of Perfection', 'My Special Brother', and the drama 'Unemployment Benefit Romance', are drawing attention with their collaboration and meeting with talented production teams.
Director Park Joon-woo said "It is the story of doctors who help terminally ill patients die painlessly and the police who chase them. The peculiar thing is that the main characters are doctors, but from the police side, they are serial killers and criminals. The key theme is why they were euthanized. In Korea, the subject of euthanasia has been dealt with head-on for the first time. It's a thriller genre, but every episode has a story. I think we can talk about what kind of death we wanted and why we asked for euthanasia," he said, introducing the play.

Lee Bo-young is a physician who causes assisted death. In the drama, I acted my character thinking it was Sun. I thought it was a role to save people and end their pain. Depending on the viewers, it could be illegal, so I think it's a controversial character."
Then "We received this script when we got older and thought about our old age or the future. I'd like to bring this up once. It's not that the death of the helper is fun, but it's a topic I wanted to talk about," he said, explaining why he chose the play.
Ethical controversy seems to have been somewhat burdensome. Bo-young Lee "I got this script last year. At that time, I saw an article that an overseas couple died together from assisted death. And I talked about it with my husband for a long time. 'It's not bad, it seems like we've lived a happy life to be able to make this choice when we're old and not a burden' he said. I still don't know. Right, I can't say wrong. It cannot be said that it is correct when looking at the minds of the remaining people, the social view, and the children left behind. Still, I hope it will be an opportunity to talk about this topic."
Coming back as an MBC drama after 13 years "As it's been a long time, there's pressure to get a good result."," he said with a smile.

Kwon Hae-hyo plays Father Yang, the director of Maria Welfare Hospital, and Yoon Ga-yi plays Choi Ye-na, a hospital nurse where Sojung works. Kwon Hae-hyo said "It's the role of a bride who helps people who have difficulty in society and has spent a difficult environment together since Woo So-jung's childhood", and Yoon Ga-yi is a nurse who helps people die. I think it's a means of earning living expenses, but I change my mind,' he said.

Director Park said, `There are regulations for deliberation on broadcasting. It is a medical assistance death and it is also described as a medical assistance suicide. It is said that the criteria for deliberation by the Korea Communications Commission should not encourage suicide in the description of death. Since similar cases should not come out due to the drama, MBC also decided that it would be good to define it as a 19-year-old limit and express the essence.
Finally, Lee Min-ki said "It may be heavy because it's a rescue death, but when you think about it, it's about living." Lee Bo-young said "I wanted to talk to many people because it became a hot topic when I took a picture, but I'm looking forward to and worried about how the show will react to it." Still, if it becomes noisy, it means that many people will watch it, so I hope you have time to talk about death in depth."
MBC's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Merry Kills People' will premiere at 10 p.m. on August 1 (Fri).
