‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Misses Emmy Nominations, Breaking Past Streak



Netflix's second season of the Korean drama 'Squid Game' (played by Hwang Dong-hyuk, directed) failed to win the Emmy Award, an American broadcasting awards ceremony.

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards (Emmy Awards) announced the candidates on the 16th (Korea Standard Time) and excluded 'Squid Game 2' from the list of candidates. 'Squid Game' was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards in 2022 through Season 1, which was released in 2021. 'Squid Game' was the first non-English-speaking drama series to be popular in Korea and abroad. As a result, he was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for the first time in a Korean and non-English language drama series.

Lee Jung-jae, who played the main character Sung Ki-hoon through "Squid Game", was also the first Korean actor to be nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who simultaneously wrote and directed, was nominated for Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series and Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, and Park Hae-soo, who played Oh Young-soo and Jo Sang-woo, was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series.




Jung Ho-yeon, who played Kang Sae-byeok, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, while Lee Yu-mi, who played Ji-young, was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series. In addition, the production team was selected as candidates in large numbers, producing 13 categories and 14 candidates. Among them, he won six awards, including the Director Award (Hwang Dong-hyuk), the Best Actor Award (Lee Jung-jae), the Guest Award (Lee Yoo-mi), the Visual Effects Award, the Stunt Performance Award, and the Production Design Award.

The Emmy Award is the most prestigious award in the American broadcasting industry, hosted by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), which began in 1949. This year's Emmy Drama Awards include Disney+ Star Wars series 'Andor'and Netflix's 'Diplomat', HBO Max's 'The Last of Us', 'The Pit', 'White Lotus', and Hulu 'FaradaEight works were named, including Is', Apple TV+'Severance: Disconnected', and 'Slow Hossis'.

Aside from his high performance, "Squid Game 2" has not been nominated for an Emmy Award. Some analysts say that it may be because the story was not complete as season 2 and season 3 were divided. In addition to the controversy over his acting skills, even Cho Yu-ri, who had insisted on the second Jung Ho-yeon, including the actors who expected him to be nominated, has failed to be nominated.
