Mystery Film 'The Ugly' Expands Globally With Release in 157 Countries

Mystery film 'The Ugly' (directed by Yeon Sang-ho, produced by Wow Point) is set to be released overseas in earnest, and it is drawing keen attention from overseas media.

It will be released in North America and Taiwan on September 26 and will continue its global move with sequential releases in 157 countries where 'Face', which first met with local audiences, was pre-sold.

Since it was released as a world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, 「Face」, which is expected to be a global box office following Korea, has continued to receive favorable reviews overseas, sparking a buzz.

In a feature story about Screndaily's topical film at the 2025 Venice, Toronto Film Festival, TIM Grierson praised the movie `The new film directed by Yeon Sang-ho is a delicate mystery in which his adult son digs into the truth about the death of his mother, who disappeared decades ago.'

In addition, director Yeon Sang-ho chooses a completely different path in 'face'. It proved that a great story can be told without fancy devices. Park Jung-min was praised for playing his son Lim Dong-hwan and his father Lim Young-gyu's youth at the same time. The film depicts a mother's brutal life head-on, showing a tragic power rarely seen in Korean films as well as in world films." (Fort Worth Weekly_Kristian Lin)"The film begins with an interesting mystery, but it soon unfolds in a desperate direction, leaving a shocking aftertaste. It gives a powerful emotional shock without a twist. 'Face' refers to all those who bullied and turned away from her, not her appearance. As the movie progresses, their sins are revealed, leading to a disastrous ending." (Movieweb_Jonathan Fuge) is being praised both in Korea and abroad.

'The Ugly' is a story about a blind man who becomes a craftsman in all fields, his son, and his wife and mother who have been buried for 40 years. Park Jung-min, Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-bin, Lim Sung-jae, and Han Ji-hyun appeared, and Yeon Sang-ho, director of 'Train to Busan'Ban Peninsula', took the megaphone.
