Supreme Court Orders Retrial in Lee Min-woo Fraud Case

Broadcasting writer A, who received a nine-year prison sentence for cheating singer Lee Min-woo from the group Shinhwa to extort a large amount of money, will be re-examined at the Supreme Court's judgment.

According to the legal community on the 27th, the second division of the Supreme Court (Chief Justice Kim Sang-hwan) reversed the court case, which ordered nine years in prison and 2.6 billion won in additional fines to the broadcaster A, who was indicted on charges of violating the law on aggravated punishment of certain economic crimes (fraud) and violating the Lawyers Act, and recently returned the case to the Seoul High Court.

The Supreme Court decided that some of the acts of transferring money already taken away from them to other accounts may not be a separate crime, and that it should be reviewed again.

The Supreme Court should have further heard whether each transfer was a separate amount of money, not a loan in this case, or whether the defendant's act of transfer alone could have increased the infringement of legal interests on the victim or caused a new infringement of legal interests"It was judged.

A former broadcast writer approached Lee Min-woo, who was suspected of sexual harassment in 2019, and asked for money, saying, `I will help you to be cleared of charges because you have connections within the prosecution.' and was handed over to trial on charges of stealing about 2.6 billion won.

However, it was confirmed that A had no friendship with the prosecutors and never delivered the money to the prosecutors.

When Lee Min-woo was cleared of charges in December of that year, A approached again and demanded additional money, saying, `The prosecutors are trying to overturn the charges.'

Meanwhile, Lee Min-woo was booked on June 29, 2019, for sexually harassing two women in their 20s at the next table while drinking with colleagues at a bar in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. In this regard, Lee Min-woo was cleared of charges due to insufficient evidence.
