Seoul National University Hospital Holds Digital and Bio Innovation Forum...Strengthen research, clinical, and commercialization structures

Seoul National University Hospital co-hosted the Digital and Bio Innovation Forum 2025 with Naver on the 21st to explore the possibility of convergence of advanced technology and clinical medicine.

This forum was set up as a venue to lay the foundation for patient-centered future medical care based on the excellent research capabilities of Seoul National University Hospital.

The forum's subtitle is 'Connecting Technology and Humanity', and attended by Seoul National University Hospital Director Kim Young-tae, Medical Life Research Institute Director Kim Yong-jin, Naver CEO of Soo Yeon Choi, and Lee Hae-jin, GIO, to share digital bio research results and commercialization cases and discuss clinical applicability.

In July 2023, Seoul National University Hospital launched the Naver Digital Bio Challenging Research Support Project ' with a scale of 30 billion won for three years using donations received from Naver. This project supports the unique and innovative medical research of the Seoul National University Hospital group and researchers from Seoul Medical University, and aims to create an environment in which researchers are immersed in research, systematically manage research results, and build a virtuous cycle ecosystem of research-clinical-commercialization.

The project supports new and original research, research on intellectual property rights and commercialization objectives, and multidisciplinary research. In the first year of the project (2023.07.~2024.06), 24 out of a total of 436 research projects were selected, and in the second year (2024.07.~2025.06, 20 out of 197 research projects were selected. It also plans to discover the possibility of next-generation medical innovation in the third year (2025.07. ~ 2026.06).

The Digital and Bio Innovation Forum 2025, designed to share these business achievements, consisted of two sessions and a special lecture by Naver's Lee Hae-jin GIO, and discussed future medical care that will be changed through innovative technologies.

The theme of the first session was 'AI-based medical innovation', with Naver's Yang Sang-hwan, D2SF leader, and Kim Yong-jin, head of the Medical Life Research Institute at Seoul National University Hospital, participating as chairmen.

Professor Yoon Soon-ho (Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital) suggested the possibility of promoting joint research and developing reliable AI through the establishment of a standardized medical database and multi-center integration. Professor Lee Hyung-chul (SNU Hospital Healthcare AI Research Institute) then explained the progress of the development of a large language model (LLM) tailored to the reality of domestic medical care and the possibility of using it in the clinical field. In addition, Professor Lee Chang-han (Pharmacology Class at Seoul National University) introduced AI-based ultra-high-speed precision antibody discovery platform technology that innovatively improves the antibody discovery system. Finally, Bae Yoo-bin (Department of Medicine at Seoul Medical University) proposed safe medical data utilization through security enhancement technologies including homogeneous encryption. During the Q&A session after the presentation, in-depth discussions continued among participants, focusing on ethical issues and security issues related to the future of medical AI technology.

The second session was held under the theme of 「New Horizons of Future Medical Care through Innovative Technology」, and Na Gun-ho, head of Naver's Healthcare Research Institute, and Lee Ho-young, vice president of Seoul National University of Medicine.

Professor Lee Seung-pyo (Circulatory Medicine Department at Seoul National University Hospital) introduced a new concept of wireless transmission and reception aids in the heart that can be injected and repeatedly charged, and suggested the possibility of innovation in heart failure treatment. Professor Kim Jae-hwan (Bundang Seoul National University Hospital's gastroenterology department) announced a plan to develop a flexible growth robot endoscope without pain, suggesting the possibility of developing safe and innovative medical devices that overcome the shortcomings of existing endoscopes. Subsequently, Professor Seo Joon-young (SNU Hospital's Department of Radiology) introduced the automated AI integrated robot system and discussed ways to improve the quality of rigid prostate ultrasound and the test environment.

Finally, Professor Dong-Hyun Cho (Seoul National University Anatomy Class) presented the effectiveness verification and clinical trial preparation process of oligonucleotide (ASO)-based treatments for customized gene therapy in children with Usher syndrome. Following the presentation, active discussions were followed with participants about the commercialization potential of each technology and its advantages in clinical application.

Representative Soo Yeon Choi said, "Naver has been innovating in various industries based on digital technologies such as AI, big data, and cloud, and we believe these technologies can bring new changes in the medical field as well."We hope that further innovative technological and medical developments will be made through collaboration between Naver and Seoul National University Hospital." he said.

Director of Seoul National University Hospital Kim Young-tae said, `As a research-oriented hospital, Seoul National University Hospital is striving to create a creative research environment and revitalize high-level research and multidisciplinary tasks"We will accelerate digital bio-innovation in hospitals through synergy with Naver and strengthen the virtuous cycle of research-clinical-commercialization by training excellent medical scientists to suggest the direction of advanced future medical care."
