Actor Seol Kyung-gu shared his deep thoughts on actor Park Eun-bin and the character he played in the Disney+ original series 'HyperKnife'.
Seol Gyeong-gu met with Sports Chosun at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 14th and responded to an interview to commemorate the entire episode of 'HyperKnife'.
In the play, Seol Kyung-gu played Choi Deok-hee, the world's best neurosurgeon and teacher who gave up his once most cherished pupil. Park Eun-bin plays the role of 'Jeong Se-ok', which he pushed back on the past. The two characters captured the eyes and ears of viewers by showing complex emotional lines that could not be defined beyond simple teachers and disciples.
Seol Kyung-gu says that the character "'Seok' is emotionally impulsive and straightforward, but 'Deokhee' is a character who relieves everything inside. Two figures at opposite points eventually move forward in the same direction and become mirrors for each other."
He says, "'Looking at Se-ok, Deok-hee opens up his heart, too. Deok-hee was originally a person who did not stand by, but Se-ok was a person who came through the gap. That was good"He confessed. He was then told that "It's like love", but rather than love, many emotions such as compassion, sorry, guilt, and responsibility were mixed. I felt sorry for myself, and I felt like I was looking at me when I was young," he added.
The emotions of the two are compressed in one of the scenes in the play. It is the scene where Se-ok hits Deok-hee with an umbrella. Seol Kyung-gu was relieved even though it was the right scene. Deok-hee does not get angry even if she is subjected to such violence. Rather, he is a person who accepts even that. Such a setting was very unique and symbolically showed the special feelings between Seok and Deokhee", he explained.
The two actors talked a lot outside the set and improved their understanding of the character. Seol Kyung-gu said, "I've filmed a lot so far, but this is the first time that the other actor has talked so much about the work." "Park Eun-bin asked me small questions first, so I was able to express my thoughts comfortably." Thanks to this, I was able to get closer to the character Jeong Se-ok"I expressed my gratitude.
Seol smiled as she recalled one of the words Park Eun-bin had said about the work. Eun-bin described this work as 'dead melo'. That was pretty funny, and I thought I had a surprisingly accurate grasp of the genre. Because it can't be defined only as a hard medical thriller."
'Hyperknife' is a work in which the confrontation and reconciliation between teachers and disciples, the wounds and growth of the inner world, and the intricately intertwined emotional lines are closely arranged under the genre of medical. To contain this complex emotional structure, Seol Gyeong-gu detailed not only external changes but also internal details, such as losing about 10kg of weight and fasting.
He said "Choi Deok-hee is clearly not good or evil. It wasn't easy to lead such a character convincingly, but rather, I was able to immerse myself because of the complexity."
The unconventional teacher-student relationship established with Park Eun-bin became the central axis of 'hyperknife' and contributed greatly to increasing the emotional density of the entire work. "Thanks to the character Jung Se-ok and the actor Park Eun-bin, I think my acting was able to expand further," Seol said.
Meanwhile 'HyperKnife' is available on Disney+.
