JTBC's new Saturday-Sunday drama 'Good Boy' (written by Lee Dae-il, directed by Shim Na-yeon) is a new work by Lee Dae-il, who received attention for his genre completeness and solid narrative through the 'Life on Mars' and 'Aide' series. ▶ What kind of drama is 'Good Boy'?
"Good Boy" is an action youth investigation drama with a comic theme about former medalists who become police officers. Above all, like the title, it is the story of 'Good People' and 'People who try to be good people' I hope you enjoy the stories of hot people fighting against criminals who have no shame in a world of all kinds of foul play."
▶ I also wonder how 'Good Boy' is different from the existing investigative drama.
"The setting of a former medalist police officer itself is a differentiated point. It seems that the process of following the emotional line after retirement of the players, who seemed colorful, and the action of integrating their organs into the investigation when they were players, can give a different kind of fun. As if watching a fierce competition, I hope the main characters can feel the sense of accomplishment of blood, sweat, and tears together."
▶ How was the setting of the medalists' specialty strong special teams born?
"I've seen a documentary about the medalist martial arts. I wanted to talk about the police special team of them. The martial arts special, athlete interviews, various materials, and actual events were referenced, and imagination was added to create a 'Good Boy' worldview. In fact, there is no such police organization. Rather than such a specificity, the focus was on each character living with realistic concerns in it. agonizing, hurting, and trying, trying to tell the story of all of us, 'not special but special'"
▶ Why did you choose these 5 events: boxing, shooting, fencing, wrestling, and discus throwing?
Since "Good Boy" is a story against injustice and prejudice, I conceived a cool and exhilarating action from the beginning. He thought about allowing each character to show his or her own style of action, and chose boxing imbued with desperate struggles, quiet but powerful shooting, sharp stabbing and cutting fencing, solidly enduring wrestling, and a disc where strength and balance were important. It is also important that they are all individual events. I thought it was suitable to draw a story of characters from different inclinations teaming together, trusting each other and growing up."
▶ Following the previous work, the fictional city 'Inseongsi' was set as the background in 'Good Boy'.
"Inseongsi" has been used since the first drama "Let's fight, ghost". There is no particular reason, but it is my own virtual city where the nostalgia of my childhood hometown remains. 'Life on Mars' 1980s personality is what it looks like now, and it's been used again as a backdrop for 'Good Boy' with a funny imagination."
▶ Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun, Lee Sang-i, Heo Sung-tae, Tae Won-seok, and Oh Jung-se, who will compete against them, were cast. How did you feel when you heard this news?
"I was surprised that it was possible for such good actors to come together in one work. After casting, characters that existed only in imagination became concrete and began to live and move vividly, and I felt as if the actors were leading the characters, not the script, so I was happy??C. Just being able to see these actors on one screen makes me grateful and happy."
▶ Director Shim Na-yeon is one of the directors who currently receives the most attention, directing 'The Host' and 'Bad Mother'. I wonder what the process of working together was like.
"When I looked at the director's work, I liked the agony and stubbornness of the director full of the screen. 'Good Boy' is a work with a scale in the complex genre, so there were many difficulties. However, thanks to the director's trust and entrustment, I was grateful to be able to write comfortably. Above all, I am looking forward to how the director's strength and delicacy will be incorporated into the work, both as a writer and as a viewer. With such a great director and actor, we are full of expectations and hopes that we will be able to solve any difficulties, just as we did when the `Avengers' against the villain in the moment of crisis appeared.
▶ What message do you want to convey through 'Good Boy'?
"In the drama "What is a good thing to be born with? I'm trying to live a good life. There is a line from Yoon Dong-ju (Park Bo-gum) that "Because I don't want to regret it." Everyone who lives through a monotonous and frustrating life day by day thinks that 'Good Boy'. I worked with the hope that it would be a gift-like drama for such good boys. When you're tired and struggling, when you want to give up, I want you to reawaken the passion that remains on one side of your chest and become a small spark to take a step forward thinking about the hot 'day' that you forgot."
