A full explanation at the hearing..More than active...Director Park Chan-wook decides to break up with the expelled writers' association (Roundup)

Director Park Chan-wook, who represents Korea, confronted the issue of expulsion from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) with a resolute attitude.

An official from director Park Chan-wook's production company, Mohofilm, said in an interview with Sports Chosun on the 12th that `Recently, the news of Park Chan-wook's expulsion from the WGA was reported by the U.S. foreign media. It was reported that he violated the rules during the U.S. Writers Association strike that took place last year, but director Park drew the line, saying, "There is no violation of the rules."

Director Park had already finished filming 'Co-worker' when the Writers Guild of America, which took place in 2023, continued its massive strike. It is evidence that the reason for the expulsion of the WGA, which is 'I wrote the script during the strike, is not true. However, HBO, the distribution studio of 'Co-worker', received a request for revision for some of the second half of the editing, and director Park only shared simple ideas with Don McKelly as a co-showrunner. Above all, director Park already knew that the writer could not write the script during the strike, and of course, he did not write the script", he explained.

After receiving a question from the WGA, Park attended a hearing held this spring to explain the specific situation and sincerely explained that it was not a script. In fact, director Park's explanation was accepted to some extent at the hearing, and afterwards, he was advised to be cautious by the judges, but the board of directors suddenly reversed the 'private warning' and immediately decided to expel him. The whole process is over in the spring of this year."

Regarding concerns that Hollywood activities could be restricted after the expulsion of the WGA, the official also said, "The process of appealing is very difficult and takes a long time. Director Park said, "There is nothing we can do about it, rather than appeal' I decided to focus on the work and gave up my appeal. It is also not true that Hollywood activities are difficult after being expelled. There will be nothing to worry about."

Previously, director Park Chan-wook presented 'Co-worker' last year based on Viet Thanh Nguyen's novel of the same name, which drew worldwide attention with his Pulitzer Prize win. In the 1970s, when Free Vietnam was defeated, it is a series about the struggles of a Vietnamese mixed-race youth who defected to the United States between two civilizations and two ideologies, and director Park Chan-wook participated as a co-showrunner and executive producer of 『Co-worker" and led the entire process from production, writing and directing. Director Park Chan-wook directed from the 1st to the 3rd, Fernando Meirelles directed from the 4th, and Mark Munden directed from the 5th to the 7th.

However, as the news that coach Park Chan-wook was recently expelled from the WGA due to 'co-worker' spread, domestic fans' concerns grew.

On the 8th (local time), U.S. entertainment media Variety and other foreign media reported that WGA announced that it would suspend the membership of director Park Chan-wook and actor-director Don McKellar, who wrote the script for the HBO series 'Cooperation', and expel the two from the union. The WGA did not disclose whether it violated specific strike regulations or not based on the script written during the writer's strike in 2023 for expelling director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar. Concerns have been raised that director Park Chan-wook's Hollywood activities may be restricted by the expulsion of the WGA.
