Director Hwang Dong-hyuk received the Achievement Award at the 'The Gotham 2025 TV Awards' held in New York on the 3rd (Korea Standard Time). The Gossom Film and Media Institute, which organizes the Gossom Awards, previously announced that director Hwang Dong-hyuk was chosen as the recipient of the award for achievement. The Achievement Award is given to creators and artists who have broadened the horizons of TV and have had an indelibly profound impact.
Earlier, the Gossom Awards said, `We pay tribute to director Hwang for creating a global sensation 'Squid Game' by combining solid storytelling with sharp cultural interpretation through this achievement award.' Season 1 of 'Squid Game won the Best Feature Series award at the 2021 Gossom Awards.
Taking the stage for the award, Lee Jung-jae, the main character of the 「Squid Game」, said "It is an honor to be here at the 2nd Gotham TV Awards to commemorate a storyteller with an imagination who changed the game of global TV. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is an outstanding creator, writer, and director"When "Squid Game" was first released on Netflix on September 17, 2021, it became a worldwide phenomenon, capturing not only the eyes of viewers, but also the hearts of countless people, conversations in daily life, and collective imagination. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who was on stage, thanked the award and said, "The High Summer Awards was the first award ceremony I attended in New York in 2021. That night 'Squid Game' won the best series award and it was amazing. I remember saying at the time that `everything was like a miracle.' It was also a miracle that the script, which everyone rejected, became a series in 12 years. And it's been four years since I stood here again and won this glorious trophy. Even now, I believe that the miracle is still in flux. Many people have been with me on this miraculous journey"I'm grateful to everyone who rejected "Squid Game" in 2009. If anyone had accepted this, today's 'Squid Game' would not exist" he joked.
He also thanked Lee Jung-jae for joining Netflix and 'Squid Game'. Hwang drew laughter by saying, `Thanks for being number 456, Sung Ki-hoon,' adding, `We were not successful in saving other players in the `Squid Game`, but our show saved.' He also thanked the production company CEO Kim Ji-yeon for sharing the journey of 'Squid Game' and gave him a lot of energy throughout his time together. He pushed me to go further."
