According to the latest chart released by the U.S. music media Billboard on the 23rd (local time), Cortis' first EP 'Color Outside the Lines' ranked 15th with 'Billboards 200'. It is the second highest ranking of the K-pop group's debut album of all time. It is the highest performance except for the team of the nature of the project, which brings together popular members from different groups.
If the scope is narrowed down to the criteria of rookies who debuted this year, Cortis is the only K-pop artist who has entered 'Billboards 200'. Looking at the entire K-pop boy group that has debuted in the past four years, 'Billboard 200' is the first album to break through the top 20 list of 'Color Outside the Lines'. In addition, Cortis swept the top charts of major albums, including 'Top Album Sales'(3rd place), 'Top Current Album Sales'(3rd place), and 'World Album'(2nd place).
The popularity of music as well as albums is also unusual. The intro song 'Go!' entered Billboard 'Global 200' at number 180. 'Global (excluding the United States)' included 'Go!'(136th) and 'Fashion'(198th). The two song charts are ranked based on online streaming and digital sales (downloads) aggregated in more than 200 countries/regions around the world. Unlike 'Hot 100', which includes radio airplay scores, it is considered one of the indicators to gauge the global influence of artists as it is a chart made by Billboard in the U.S. to quickly reflect global pop music market trends. Thanks to this performance, Cortis ranked 24th on Billboard 'Artist100'.
Cortis is a work that contains the identity of the Young Creator Crew, which co-creatures music, choreography, and video, and has hit the so-called 'jackpot' in the United States, the center of the global music market. According to Big Hit Music, the U.S. has played the most Cortis news on Spotify, the world's largest streaming platform. In other words, the music made by the five members captivated the listener with 'the birthplace of pop'.
Major foreign media cited 'freshness' as a factor in their success. The Rolling Stone, a leading American music magazine, and the tmrw magazine, a global music and cultural media outlet, described Cortis as "a new form of K-pop group that is not bound by the mold" and "it brought out its raw energy and harsh senses instead of its smooth completeness unique to K-pop.' In particular, Tomorrow Magazine was created by five members discussing lyrics, choreography, and the color of LP. That persistence brings the album to life."
The music video, in which five members participated as co-directors, also attracted the interest of global music fans. 'Go!', 'What You Want', 'Fashion' have been listed on YouTube in the United States 'Increasing Popularity Video'. Many domestic and foreign YouTubers showed great interest in the fresh ideas of teenagers as they analyzed the meaning of the video and production.
The spectacular performance sparked Cortis' rise in popularity. Solid live performance and choreography made by themselves harmonized like clothes that fit perfectly. Their various stages, including music broadcasts, went viral. The dance challenge of following their dance spread on social media, and it caused a great repercussion, with 'Go!' taking second place on Spotify 'Daily Viral Song America'.
Cortis is the first team in six years by Hive (Chairman Bang Si-hyuk) Music Group's label Big Hit Music after BTS and Tomorrow X Together. Their first step, 'Color Outside the Lines', left a significant footprint on the Billboard chart. Attention is focusing on the records that those who have only been in the world for a month will write in the future.
