It's like another universe! ...Director Thasem, The Paul Glory won by directors cut (all-around)

Director Taseem expressed his gratitude to Korean fans for their enthusiastic support for the film 'The Fall: Directors Cut'.

Director Tasem held a press conference in Korea on the 6th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Director Taseem attended the site to tell the story of the work.

Released on the 25th of last month, 'The Fall: Director's Cut' is the directorial version of the 2008 film 'The Fall: Odious and the Door of Fantasy' (hereinafter 'The Fall'. It is a story of stuntman Roy telling a curious young girl, Alexandria, about the fantastic adventures of five outlaws in 24 countries around the world.

'The Fall: Director's Cut' returned to the director's edition after 18 years with 4K remastering, adding more glamorous footage and new scenes. Director Tasem, who met Korean audiences with the re-release after 16 years since 2008, said "People seem to be enthusiastic when they show something completely different from the existing ones, such as 'Parasite' and 'Old Boy'. Isn't there a case where fashion will become retro in 20 years. I think my movie is similar. If there was full support from critics when 'The Fall' was first released, there would have been another outcome. I don't think a movie can satisfy everyone. The audience can say 'It's fantastic' or 'It's a beggar' But if I just say 'It's okay', I'm afraid for some reason" In the meantime, "I'm grateful that this movie was rediscovered by someone thanks to the Internet. I didn't do social media (social media accounts) separately, so I didn't know that there was someone who was so enthusiastic after watching 'The Fall'. It seems that a new generation that is completely different from then wants this movie. In addition, no one wanted this movie at first, so I released it at my own expense. I know there are many female audiences in Korea, but I'm so grateful."

As for how he came to present the director's edition, Tasem said, `The first complete version I made was 4K. At the time of its release, it was difficult for the 4K version to be shown, but I wanted to make a movie with the latest technology because I thought that 'this movie must be a movie that will last for a long time'. But I'm doing 4K remastering, and it's hard to find the 4K filming at the time. So I took the original version that I filmed and completed it in Montreal."

As for the reason for not using CG (computer graphics), "No matter how great special effects are used, they tend to look old-fashioned after a certain period of time", he said. "But after half a century, they look cool because of their unique retro feel." I like Fasolini movies, and if you look at the works made by Stanley Kubrick, they seem contemporary even if you look at them 20 to 30 years later. These directors don't pursue contemporary things. I choose a magical space as my location, so I didn't want to say that if I cover CG in a space like this, I feel like I'm wearing a hat again. Personally, I like CG, but I didn't want to use CG in this work."

Director Taseem, who values visual storytelling when making movies, said, `When I was young, I went to boarding school in the Himalayas, and my father worked as an engineer in Iran.' `As a result, I came across cartoons in languages that I don't understand on TV, and naturally came to value visual storytelling.'

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets, 'The Fall: Directors Cut' enjoyed surpassing 100,000 viewers on the 4th. Director Thasem said "It's as if 'The Fall' has been revived."I think it's surprising to be re-examined like this. At that time, when I made the movie, I felt a lot of loss about breaking up with my girlfriend, but now that I came back, I thought I was very young and ambitious. I don't think I'll be able to make this movie again today."

Finally, when asked if there was an actor he wanted to work with, he said "I tend not to work with actors in particular in mind. Usually producers think of actors first, but I use the opposite approach. It's like pulling a cart in front of a horse. First of all, if you have an idea, and if you have a song that fits the concept, you make a music video with it. That's why I was able to make Lady Gaga's music video for the first time in 28 years. "If there's another interesting subject, I'd like to make a work in Korea as well. It's like another universe when you see a completely different culture."
