Director Yeon Sang-ho met with Sports Chosun at a hotel in Yeouido, Seoul on the 24th and said, `The collaboration with director Alfonso Cuarón was decided even before the movie went to Netflix.'
Released on the 21st, 'Gye Sirok' tells the story of a pastor who believes that it is God's revelation to condemn the criminal of the disappearance case and a detective in charge of the disappearance case who suffers from the illusion of his dead brother chasing their respective beliefs. Director Yeon Sang-ho, who directed the films 'Train to Busan', 'Pandae', and the drama 'Hell', took the megaphone, and director Alfonso Cuaron participated as an executive producer.
It was the first film released this year by Netflix, which garnered global viewers' expectations. Yeon said "I didn't put much meaning on that part. Netflix said it would be released in March, so it didn't get involved much. Isn't Act 4 about to be released. I thought Netflix focused on genre diversity. I thought it was to give you the feeling of an entertainment channel where you can enjoy a variety of contents," he said.
As for the modifier 'K-genre father', "When I go home, I think I'm actually my father's age, but I think I'm already my father's age (laughs). When I first debuted and 'Train to Busan', I felt young, but time flew by when I made a few movies. In a way, isn't the 40s the time when you work the most in your life. I feel like that period has passed like crazy."
He also mentioned the reason for releasing the work on Netflix. Director Yeon thought that "I think 'Chaserok' is not a very popular work, so it is a content that can be divided between pros and cons. It was hoped that if the appropriate budget plan was released in theaters, it would be meaningful, if not a big success, but the theater investment situation was frozen and rigid"It could be a bit of an experimental challenge, so I felt burdened" he explained.
In particular, director Yeon also conducted his first collaboration with director Alfonso Cuarón through 'Essirok'. He responded, "It was before the movie went to Netflix that I got to work with director Alfonso Cuarón"At that time, I was in a meeting with several production companies to meet a partner on the American project, and the director liked me and gave me a project proposal first. As I said earlier at the production presentation, the director felt that he valued the creator's vision. In the planning stage, editing, and final promotional marketing, he also gave opinions on how to communicate the way I planned for the first time to the viewers."
