Director Yoon Ga-eun's new film 「The Master of the World」, which will be released in Korea on October 22, has been officially invited to the Pingyao Film Festival, called 「China's Sundance」, following the Toronto Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival.
The Pingyao Film Festival, which marks its ninth anniversary this year, was founded by Jia Zhangke, an Asian great director from China, and is a competitive film festival focusing on discovering original and intense emerging films. The "Master of the World" was invited to the Crouching Tigers category, an international rookie competition for directors who made three or fewer feature films, at the Pingyao Film Festival, which consists of five categories, and was nominated for three categories, including the Roberto Rossellini Awards for best picture, best director, and judge.
In 2024, Neo Sora's 'Happy End' won the jury prize, Chung Ju-ri's 'Next Sohee' won the grand prize in 2021, and Yoon Ga-eun's 'Master of the World' became the second film in Korean film history to be invited to the international rookie competition section of the Pingyao Film Festival.
"Sometimes words of good faith hurt, and sometimes silence is the greatest consideration," said Junko Fukatsu, a programmer in the Crouching Tigers category. In the movie, the 18-year-old owner (Seo Soo-bin) shows that he is maturing while suffering from growing pains with weakness and resilience. Director Yoon Ga-eun elaborates on the intimate and delicate story of youth through 'The Master of the World' and at the same time reminds the audience of what it means to live as a master of life' through a firm gaze. I am very happy to present his first return in six years through the Crouching Tigers category at the Pingyao Film Festival, and attention is being paid to whether the "Master of the World" will announce the news of another award following the "Next Sohee".
"The Master of the World" is directed by "Us" and "Our House" and is able to meet the deeper and richer production world of director Yoon Ga-eun, who has been outstanding in bringing delicate and subtle emotions to life. Following Kim Soo-an and Choi Soo-in of `Kongnamul'Train to Busan', Yoon Ga-eun played the owner of another jewel-like newcomer Seo Soo-bin, which was discovered by director Yoon Ga-eun, and attracted the audience of the Toronto Film Festival.
'Master of the World' is a story about an 18-year-old high school girl who doesn't know where to turn, and everyone's world begins to shake at the words she uttered in anger. Seo Soo-bin, Jang Hye-jin, Jungsik Kim, Kang Chae-yoon, Lee Jae-hee, and Kim Ye-chang appeared, and director Yoon Ga-eun of 'Us'Our House' took the megaphone. It will be released on October 22.
