MBC announced this month that it has signed a partnership to implement strategic equity investments in Jaedam Media and to continuously exchange, plan, develop, and commercialize content IPs held by both companies.
Jaedam Media is a webcomic and web novel production and distribution company with more than 500 webcomic IPs, including 'weak hero', 'gung', 'neighborhood lawyer Jo Deul-ho', 'Boy man', and 'Youth Blossom', with a pool of 300 writers.
In particular, the drama 'Weak Hero Class2', which was recently released on Netflix, ranked first in the global TOP10 series (non-English), and its previous work 'Weak Hero Class1', which was released a month ago, also ranked second in the global TOP10 series (non-English). This popularity led to an explosive response, with sales of the original webtoon Weak Hero increasing 20 times.
Through this strategic investment and partnership, MBC has secured an opportunity to continuously videoize the webtoons of Jaedam Media. Based on this, it plans to expand its content portfolio to OTT contents and short-form dramas as well as existing broadcasting contents by utilizing production capabilities within MBC Group.
Jaedam Media is also expected to strengthen its competitiveness in imaging and secure a competitive advantage in global distribution by incorporating MBC's planning and production capabilities. In addition, we plan to diversify the material of webtoons by continuously reviewing the webtoons of video IP such as dramas owned by MBC.
MBC and Jaedam Media also announced that they plan to hold a hybrid competition, including dramas, webtoons, short-forms, and movies, to discover a variety of emerging IPs and writers that cross the boundaries of the genre, and to jointly develop selected works.
Yoon Mi-hyun, the head of MBC's content business division, said, `Securing IPs that have been proven to be successful in advance is very important in strengthening MBC's content competitiveness.' `We expect the two companies to collaborate in various ways to create a global success story that connects the weak hero through this strategic investment in the media for retelling.'
"With MBC's strategic investment, we will strengthen the secondary commercialization area of various source IPs owned by Jaedam Media and further expand the influence of K-webtoon in the global market," said Hwang Abuse, CEO of Jaedam Media. "Through this partnership, which combines the capabilities of both companies, we will continue to introduce innovative business models and excellent content." he said.
