Netflix Warns Tencent Over Alleged ‘Culinary Class Wars’ Copycat

Netflix mentioned its response to China's illegal copying of Black and White Cooks.

Netflix held 'Netflix Entertainment Festival 2025' at a hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 2nd and unveiled this year's and next year's entertainment lineup. At the event, Hwang Seul-woo PD of 'Crime Scene Zero', Jang Ho-ki PD of"Physical Asia", Kim Ye-seul PD of"Kenyan Three Meals" and"Lee Seo-jin's Dalla", Kim Hak-min PD of"Black and White Cook: War of the Cooking Classes 2", Kim Jae-won PD of"Solo Hell 5", Jeong Jong-yeon PD of"Mystery Investigation Team 2", Lee So-min PD of"Daehwan Jang 2"Yoo Jae-seok Camp", Kim No-eun PD of"Morta Solo but I Want to Date.

Tencent Video, an OTT platform operated by Chinese IT company Tencent, unveiled a new entertainment program called 'Ipanfengshion' on July 17. The program features 16 famous chefs and 84 new chefs competing in cooking competitions. Most of this is similar to the popular entertainment show 'Black and White Cook' that was made in Korea, leading to controversy.

Producer Kim Hak-min said, `The first time I knew about it was because director Yoo Ki-hwan sent me a link. But there are scenes that you can't not know. Not to mention the set, there is a scene where the opening sequence explains what this program is for the first time, and I wondered if it was the same as our program with a cut-by-cut. The initial reaction was a surprising response because it was so much the same without being a little upset or anything. It was such a reaction that I felt great if I lived this hard. I even felt that it was amazing. What's unfortunate next is that the scenes that our producers made all night long were completely the same in composition, which is why I felt a little sad.

Director Yoo Ki-hwan then began an in-depth discussion after recognizing the situation. Apart from the similarity of the format of the work, it is seen that a lot of parts were used. What we consider important is the right to the work and the IP," he said, adding that he had sent a complaint to Tencent asking it to stop. In the future, we will not condone or condone the infringement of our IP and will respond officially." However, Tencent is still serving the program.

Over the past year, Netflix has released a variety of entertainment shows, including 'The influencer', 'Rookie Cho Jung-seok', 'Comedy Revenge', 'Black and White Cook: Cooking Class Wars', 'Zombie Bus: New Bloods', 'Rugby: Dying or Winning', 'Solo Hell 4', 'Devils Plan: Death Room' and 'Motasolo, but I Want to Date'. In addition, Netflix is drawing attention as it plans to release new entertainment shows this year and next year.
