Lee Young-ae met with Sports Chosun at the LG Art Center in Gangseo-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 13th and interviewed the play 'Hedda Gabler'. Lee Young-ae is receiving favorable reviews by effectively expressing the character Heda she created. In particular, as opposed to the happy marriage revealed through the media, it is also showing a new charm by playing a person who feels oppression of the marriage system. Lee Young-ae said "It would be a big deal if Hedda and I had a synchronicity. In my case, it seems that the attitude of seeing in life has widened and deepened through childbirth and parenting. Positively, I was grateful that the age of my 50s, which can show various aspects that I can solve as an actor, fits well as an actress. Hedda doesn't necessarily have to be focused on women's psychology. So, rather than simply thinking that a married woman is out of the marriage system, I thought it would be good to become a presentational play where people can think theatrically and throw a topic at themselves. It's not that I'm getting out of marriage in the current situation, but there's a desire that modern people can have, a desire that everyone doesn't know, a jealousy that they can't express, and a lot of ego. I thought about solving it in layers and did it as if I were studying."
Lee Young-ae then said "Some fans seem to be doing psychological counseling, but Heda is a woman who lives in the upper house or the lower house even if she is not Lee Young-ae." Those who think that everyone, such as the next-door man, will have such an external and inner self, said, `I thought it would be better if it could be a play where we could talk about each other rather than thinking about 'women, marriage, and so on.'
Lee Young-ae also tried to feel empathy when asked if there was any part of trying to empathize with the header. I studied a lot. I shared my opinions with several people, and I took a lecture on Ibsen from Professor Kim Mi-hye for 3-4 days. Ibsen himself was Hedda. There is a lot of inferiority for oneself, there is self-isolation that cannot belong to the upper class, and there is no external economic abundance. Hedda is not loved and has no motherhood for her. She was a woman who felt no motherhood. There is only paternal love. There is also a line that says, "'Dad always stands with his back', and the existence of paternal love was considered a pistol. So I thought I was a person with deficiencies and problems because I had an obsession with fatherhood, and no one was complete mentally. So I thought she was a woman who felt a sense of rejection from having institutional motherhood and having children. I personally came to think that a lack of love might eventually lead to such a catastrophe."
Lee Young-ae then said "Many parts of Hedda that have appeared so far seem to be in my proposal. That's the joy of acting that I haven't seen. I also feel joy for myself by pulling me up in myself that I didn't even know. Where am I going to look and try to burn you down. I feel catharsis through me, and I also feel theatrically. If I have Hedda in me, everyone can have such an evil heart. Looking at the people who post bad comments, I think about 'Go and fall' and repent. Wouldn't people all feel the same. It is said that there is a heda, but it can be a small heda, or a big heda. Everyone thinks Hedda is just different in size."
'Hedda Gabler' is a play produced by the LG Art Center to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its opening, and will be on stage from the 7th to June 8th. 'Hedda Gabler' is Lee Young-ae's first return to the theater in 32 years, and a new production play by LG Arts Center after 'Cherry Garden' in 2024. Written by world-renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen, 'Hedda Gabler' is a classic masterpiece that persistently penetrates the inner world of a woman who yearns for freedom in a time of oppression. The main character Hedda is a complex character with a beautiful, cynical, intelligent, and destructive personality, and Lee Young-ae is drawing an unconventional Hedda while continuing Hedda's lineage.
