Kim Hyang-gi's first play, "Shakespeare in Love", is based on a film of the same name that won the Academy, Golden Globe, and British Academy Film Awards, and is a delightful imagination of Shakespeare's masterpiece "Romeo and Juliet". The story, which unfolds when a young Shakespeare in a creative slump meets Viola de Lesseps, an aristocratic woman with a passion for acting, and begins to write again, leaves a deep lingering impression across the boundaries of love and art, freedom and reality. The 2023 Korean premiere stage also delicately embodied the sensibility and beauty of the original, drawing rave reviews from the audience and critics, signaling another excitement with the new casts this season.
This season, Kim Hyang-gi is making her first play as Viola de Lesseps. He has been loved for his delicate and authentic performances in the films 'Along with the Gods', the drama 'Moment at 18', and 'Joseon Psychiatrist Yoo Se-pung', heralding a new change by expanding his field of activity through this stage. Netflix series 'Casharo' and short-form drama 'Can ghosts be washed as well?' As it is about to be released, it is expected that it will show a deeper emotional line on this stage. Kim Hyang-gi is expected to reveal another charm through viola, which has a passion for acting and a desire for freedom.
Kim Hyang-gi, who was attracted to the charm of the theater stage, where he shared his breath and exchanged emotions with the audience, said, "I want to express Viola's passion and desire for freedom with sincerity," he said, expressing his determination. Like Viola as Shakespeare's muse and woman who dreams of becoming a theater actor, actor Kim Hyang-gi is also writing another narrative on stage, stepping into new areas beyond her boundaries.
Meanwhile, the play "Shakespeare in Love" will be visited by the CJ Towol Theater at the Seoul Arts Center from July 5, 2025.
