Hwang Jung-eum Case Heads to Sentencing as Prosecutors Request Three Years

Actor Hwang Jung-eum, a former member of the group Sugar, was sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling company money.

On the 21st, a final hearing was held on Hwang Jung-eum, who was indicted on charges of violating the law on aggravated punishment of certain economic crimes, etc., at the hearing of the Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Lim Jae-nam).

On this day, the prosecution demanded a three-year prison term for Hwang Jung-eum.

Hwang Jung-eum was indicted without detention on charges of embezzling 4.34 billion won in company money by December that year, starting with a loan of 800 million won under the name of Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, which owns 100% of the stake, and then taking 700 million won into his personal account in the name of provisional payment. Hwang Jung-eum was found to have invested 4.2 billion won in virtual currency, and spent the rest on property taxes and local tax card payments imposed on her.

Hwang Jung-eum admitted all charges against her at the first hearing held in May. Hwang Jung-eum said, "The move was aimed at growing the company through cryptocurrency investment," adding, "We disposed of our personal assets and reimbursed all the money we spent in the form of provisional payments from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment on May 30 and June 5.

The agency is deeply reflecting on the fact that it caused a stir due to lack of proper tax and accounting knowledge as a single corporation owner, not a professional manager. We are faithfully implementing all legal and moral measures necessary for an early resolution."

A sentencing hearing for Hwang will be held in September.
