The U.S. media Variety reported on the 8th (local time) that the WGA has expelled director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, co-writers for the HBO series "The Sympathizer".
The WGA disciplined seven people for violating strike-period rules in 2023, four of whom appealed their expulsion. However, Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar did not appeal.
Director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar co-wrote the seven-part series 'Co-worker', which was released in April 2024.
The work is based on Vietnamese-American author Viet Tyne Nguyen's novel of the same name and tells the story of a North Vietnamese spy who crossed into the United States after the end of the Vietnam War.
Robert Downey Jr., Sandra Oh and Joa Suande starred, and it was Park Chan-wook's second drama and third overseas project.
The WGA strike, which took place from May to September 2023, made it a key issue to improve the treatment of writers due to the spread of OTT and to regulate the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). At that time, numerous film and drama productions were suspended due to the strike, resulting in enormous losses.
Meanwhile, director Park Chan-wook is set to release the movie 'I Can't Help It' in Korea in September.
